Professional Retouching: Video Tutorials

An article on Photography, Photoshop by Youssef Sarhan ON 20 January 2009

This is double post, two tutorial in a series on photographic retouching. In the first part I will take you through everything. So, as a result it’s a long video (40 Mins).

In this tutorial I will complete a professional photographic retouching from start to finish. Before watching please note that there is a lot of information in this video to absorb, so watch and re-watch areas that you find more advanced. This is a 40 minute video, I’d recommend pausing it at regular intervals before continuing so that you fully understand all the processes. Some of the areas covered in this video are:

– Colour Correction
– Reshaping Features (Figure, Eyes, Lips, Cheeks, etc)
– Adjusting tonal values
– Grading the image
– Simulating a Realistic Depth of Field Simulation
– Selective Enhancement of areas

There are a lot of sub-techniques and sub-processes that go into each of the above, so if you’ve got a question leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer.

Here is the image I will be using: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/921229

In the next part I’ll focus on evening skin tonal values and removing blemishes.

High Quality Portrait Retouching

Thanks for watching guys, I hope it was helpful and insightful. As always if you’ve got any questions ask, I’ll do my best to answer.

  3. Nick says:

Hey Youssef, thanks for the tut. It’s good to see something more advanced for once. Not that the techniques were breathtaking but the whole workflow and how to combine effects and tools were really useful.thanks again, I will be following whiteink.

    thanks again

    Nick

oh and quick question: during the fast forward part when you retouch the swimsuit….it looks like you duplicate, blur and use a blending mode. if so..do you use soft light as well or is it a different blending mode?

  4. Hey Nick,

During the fast part, I copied and pasted the area (twice, so I had two layers of the once areas, in this case the bikini top)

    On one of the layers:

Upped Saturation >> Blur it >> Overlay Blending Mode >> Eraser Tool to tone down some of the areas of that layer.

I then merged that layer with the other duplicated layer and sharpend them.

Hope that clears that up. If you got any ideas for a tutorial, shoot, I’m always looking for ideas & feedback!

  5. victor says:

    Thanks

  12. @Jamie

Sure, send them over to contact [at] whiteinkblog.com

    @Joe

I tried to find it, but can’t locate it. I got it of http://www.sxc.hu

I’m not sure what the distribution license of it was so I cant post the version I have until i know. If you find it, let me know!

  13. Christian says:

    Great tutorial.

I am new to photo retouching, are there any good text books out that cover the subject in detail.

I am not after a Photoshop guide (fairly happy with its features and what they do) but something on this specific area of work would be great as colour corrections, adjusting peoples feature smoothly etc are all things I need some help with.

    Any suggestions would be fantastic.

    Thanks

  14. CalumR says:

Hey I was just wondering. Is there a chance we can get a copy of this image to practise the techniques on. Just so we can refer to your final and compare to see if we have done the tutorial right.

    Thanks
    Calum

    • I’ve been trying to source the page on sxc.hu where I downloaded the image because I need to check the license agreement if it allows me to redistribute it. I know that sounds pedantic but when you’re dealing with public domains such as this you need to be extra careful.

If it helps, I got it on sxc.hu and I’m sure if u float around searching under appropriate keywords you’ll come across it. If so could you let me know?

  15. Criss says:

Hey…ty, great job..wow..i try to make the same retouching..but i have a problemm..can not take the brush…it make me crazy…only this hand..you know..hand tool..no brush tool always…can you tell me why? did i have same wrong seetings?:-s…

    • Right now, I’m afraid you can’t download them. Perhpas the sever was under demand and wasn’t streaming well. It should work now. I might release some for download in the future if there’s more of a demand.

Thanks for the video, got some good ideas off that, nice to see others workflow =) One thing I would recommend is showing people how to use layer masks. I recon it would make your selective sharpening much faster.

  28. Tita says:

    Hey Youssef,

You have no idea how much money you saved me lol. I learned to do graphics by myself without any knowledge and that was hard enough. Now I wanted to learn to re-touch images for my magazine and your tutorial was a blessing in the right moment! lol

Thanks a lot! I’m getting better with my images. If you’d like to see my before and afters let me know. Also since, you’re looking for feedback I’d say try not slur sometimes it sounds like your slurring words and I can’t make out what you’re saying but just that other than that ur tutorials are realllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy good!

    Hey Youssef,

Thank you so much for making this tutorial. I learned some great tequnices and everything is explained so clearly. Also the end result is stunning. Im in shock of the quality and i was wondering what recording program do you use?? thank you

  34. latev says:

Mashaallah yousuf!! :D .. u made visitor light up and happy :D.. can u made actions scripts or pdf? coz i have limited connection:( so..i cant watch.. thanks you and i appreciated. waiting forward

  35. JL says:

Great tut. Something I have just started to do instead of the patch tool is to use the healing brush witht the angle and roundness modified so the the brush lies in the direction of the skin texture. It produces a very satisfactory result.

You used the unsharp mask as your prefered sharpening tool, what do you think about the high pass filter with one of the light blends?

    JL

    • High Pass sharpening is good but be keep an eye on the value, too high and you’ll get halos around the edges. You may want to go around and erase the parts of the high pass layer after.

  36. marie (south africa) says:

thanks so much for the photo retouching tutorials! you helped alot! and they were easy to follow!

  37. Kadayi says:

Really good tutorial, certainly learnt a few things from this one.

Any chance of a tutorial about how you go about masking, extracting people/hair?

That always seems to be a tricky subject.

  38. llllllllllllll says:

Hey great detail and explanation. Can I have access to a before shot so I can follow along? Is it on your flickr? thanks

  39. Ecurb says:

Greetings from Australia. I came across your video on youtuve and decided to check your blog. Thank you for posting the tutorial of the Professional Retouching video!! It is the best video available online Hands Down!!!

Just wanted to know, do you use a Pen Tablet for editing or you use a Mouse? And if you do use a Pen Tablet, can you recommend one that you use?

Hope to see more great works from you and keep up the good work!!!

  40. Brunette says:

can you do a skin smootheing/airbrushed still leaving texture tutorial??? please and thankyou

  41. Alexandra says:

    Hi Youssef,

Thanks for this tutorial, I really enjoyed it! Retouching is something I would definitely love to get into :o)

I’m hoping you’ll have some more tutorials like this on here soon?

Question for you – how would you go about creating that ‘glowing hollywood skin’ in a portrait shot? I’ve read bits about the diffuse glow filter and using gaussian blur but wondered which technique you prefer?

Thanks again and I’ll definitely be following your blog!

  42. Alexandra says:

By the way – I heard you mention you were using a Wacom tablet, which one do you use and would you recommend it?

    Cheers! :o)

  43. Tua says:

    Nice tutorial, thanks! :)

  44. Dear Youssef,

    Thank you for this tutoral.

I’m a beginner digital photographer (amateur even though I’d like to become professional) and I never found any tuttorial I really liked and really usefull to me. Usually people making the tutorials speaks a language unclear and don’t give all the ints.

Your video is amazing, your voice and explanations are clear. I’m sure it will make a difference on my pictures now.

    Many, many thanks !!!!
    Valerie

  45. retoucher77 says:
